Maundy Thursday

  • St. George's Church 7 Rutherford Place New York, NY, 10003 United States (map)

On Maundy Thursday, we remember the mandatum, or the new commandment, given by our Lord to his disciples after he washed their feet: “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet… A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:14, 34-35).

The Procession from St. George’s to Calvary – The Streets of New York – 7:30pm

This is the one occasion of the year when both Calvary and St. George’s are used within a single service. On this night, St. George’s Church represents to us the upper room, where the Last Supper was held. After the service, the ministers lead the congregation in silence to the Chapel of Repose in Calvary Church, reflecting in prayer on what has happened before, and on Christ’s walk with his disciples to the garden of Gethsemane.

The All-Night Watch – Calvary Church – 8pm to Noon

At the Chapel of Repose, the faithful take turns keeping watch and prayer throughout the night. Different parishioners have taken responsibility for each hour of the night, but anyone may join the watch at any hour.
