The 5 pm service at Calvary Church is a one hour choral evensong service. Evensong is a liturgy more than 400 years old and one of Anglicanism's great contributions to Western civilization. Developed by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), the service combines the Latin offices of Vespers and Compline and the words of this liturgy have been set to music by some of the Church's greatest composers.
Sung psalms, canticles, and hymns are interwoven with readings from the Old and New Testaments followed by a brief homily. The services main purpose is to proclaim the wonderful works of God in human history in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Holy Communion will be offered in the Chapel of the Holy Cross immediately following the service on the first Sunday of the month..
